This week Y9 had a fantastic opportunity to engage with Jason White, from the Civic Art Gallery in Barnsley. Jason is part of the community engagement team there and came to our Academy to speak about the importance of the arts and how it impacts positively on society.

Y9 heard about the powerful work that was currently being exhibited at the gallery and how this important work supported people of all ages, disabilities and financial circumstances. They learnt that art does not discriminate and it is for all.

Darton Academy are excited to participate in a future project with the gallery looking closely at Barnsley heritage, through engaging with it’s community, listening to their stories, memories, photographs and other treasures to form an archive that will exist long after we have gone. A time capsule for the children of our future to learn from.

They have been given a Guiding Question: How does Art mirror our environment, historical events and our experiences?

Students will use their knowledge and understanding of the formal elements of Art and design as well as explore the experiences of Barnsley residents over the last 70 years. Its highs, lows, commonalities and differences, its cultural tapestries and the marks left on Barnsley youth cultures. Many thanks to the Civic for providing us with such an inspiring real life learning opportunity.
