Health and Social Care

What does it mean to be healthy? This is a question that often gets asked and studying Health and Social Care at Darton Academy will enable pupils to find the answer. Our aim is to ensure pupils understand what is meant by holistic health, not just the absence of a physical illness.

Throughout this course they will look at physical, intellectual, emotional and social development; these elements will underpin everything they will study. From looking at factors that affect development throughout their life, to learning about services that are available to help with health and wellbeing. Last year pupils went to Cast theatre to watch a play about the lives of young carers produced by Salford Youth Theatre.

Health and Social Care will provide pupils with invaluable knowledge and guidance that they can follow throughout their life. They will have experience of measuring and interpreting health indicators and producing a plan to improve the health and wellbeing of individuals including themselves.

Pupils will also gain experience of demonstrating the main care values that all roles within Health and Social Care are based on. Links with Sheffield Hallam University and Doncaster and Bassettlaw teaching hospitals ensure that pupils are exposed to many of the 350 different roles available with this area through attending careers fayres, and employer encounters within school from companies such as “Medical Mavericks”. Many pupils choose to follow this career path into further education and beyond.
