KS3

Art is taught to all students in KS3 where they access one hour per week. Our KS3 art curriculum provides opportunities to access knowledge that covers the work of other artists where students are encouraged to review this systematically by analysing themes, the choice of material used, and they develop their practical skills be being exposed to a range of artistic mediums.

Pupils are given opportunities to engage with and practice art within their local context. Most recently students have been engaging with project-based learning with the Darton West Alliance as part of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations and Barnsley in Bloom.

KS4

At the end of KS3 pupils can choose to take Art and Design at GCSE level. Art is a very popular choice for many, and they pursue the AQA qualification with the Fine Art endorsement.

This GCSE allows for progression from Key Stage 3 and provides students with the freedom to learn GCSE Art and Design in ways that inspire and bring out the best in them, whilst equipping them with the skills to continue the subject with confidence at AS, A-level and beyond.

To support this progression, the assessment objectives, structure and titles are very similar to those detailed in the AS and A-level Art and Design specification.

Portfolio projects, assignments or briefs can be open-ended or more narrowly focused. There is no restriction on the choice of media, scale or format that students use to reflect and evidence their submissions.

GCSE is made up of 60% coursework and 40% exam.
