Letter to parents

14th December 2018

Dear Parents/Carers,

Christmas is nearly upon us and another term is almost over. The Autumn term has passed by incredibly quickly and I would like to take the opportunity to thank you all for your continued support.

Our new Year 7 students have settled in really well and all year groups have responded positively to the heightened expectations.  Year 11 are coming to the end of their mock examinations and will be relieved to get to the Christmas break and relax. The new home learning policy has been a success and I have been particularly impressed with how our students have accepted the challenge of using Hegarty maths. Darton Academy are one of the top performing schools in the country for questions answered and hours learning on Hegarty.

The Autumn term ends on Thursday 20th December at the normal time. It will be a Christmas Jumper day should students wish to be involved. We ask for a £1 charitable donation that will go to the Children’s Air Ambulance which is our Trust charity for this Academic year.

New Associate Principal

I am very happy to announce that we have appointed a new Associate Principal at Darton Academy who will be joining us after the half term in February 2019. Mrs E. Briggs is currently Head of School at The King’s School which is a secondary comprehensive in Pontefract. Kings are currently rated ‘Good’ by Ofsted and secured excellent outcomes in 2017/2018 under the leadership of Mrs Briggs. I will continue to work alongside her as Executive Principal and I will continue to be based at Darton. Mrs Briggs is an experienced senior leader with a background in Mathematics and she is delighted to be joining the Academy. I trust that you will join me in welcoming her to the Academy and I wish her all the best in her new role.

Change to the school day

I wrote to you earlier in the year to inform you that the governing body had approved in principle changes to the school day following the consultation. At the time we were not in a position to put this in place due to the difficulty in providing an adequate bus service. I am pleased to say that we now have a solution to this and therefore the school day will change from Monday 25th February 2019. The school start time will be 8:25am and the end time will be 2:30pm.

I will write to you with much more detail of the changes to the bus services in due course but I wanted to give you as much notice as possible. As explained in my initial letter, I firmly believe that the new school day will have a positive impact on the Academy. There will be some additional initiatives to go along side this that include priority passes and guaranteed seats on the new bus services.

New Rewards Programme

In our final week Darton Academy will be holding a series of events to celebrate the effort and achievement displayed by our learners throughout the last half term.  ‘#Do It’ is Darton Academy’s new rewards programme which is being led by Mr Wade, Mr Booth and Mrs Harrison.  There will be the opportunity to celebrate with luxury hot chocolate, cakes, pizza and a film afternoon.

Uniform

The new Delta uniform will be available from Easter 2019 and this will replace the uniform supply from The School Shop in Mapplewell.  It is not compulsory for the Delta blazer and trousers to be worn at this time but we ask that as and when your child grows out of their current uniform that the Delta uniform is purchased.  The website address is www.sptuniforms.co.uk.  Parents/carers will first have to open an account to be able to access prices and purchase any uniform.

In addition, SPT uniform will run ‘pop up shops’ where your child will be able to try uniform on and be measured by the SPT team. We have provisionally booked the 29th May 2019 as our first Darton pop up shop from 1:00pm to 6:00pm. There will be 3 more during the Summer break and another one to be confirmed in May if demand requires it.

Food Bank

Many thanks for you for your kind contributions to the food bank. Your generosity will make a massive difference to a number of families in the local area over the festive period.

Finally, on behalf of all the staff, Governors and myself, I wish you all a Merry Christmas and a very happy New Year.

Yours faithfully,

Mr A Barnett
